Is Baking Paper and Greaseproof Paper the Same Thing?

Baking paper and greaseproof paper look very, very similar but there is difference and it’s important to know it.

Baking paper (at least, KKD’s baking paper) is 100% natural double sided siliconised paper and is usually available in sheets and reels. The silicone coating is critical here because this is what creates release properties and prevents your baking sticking to oven trays and cake tins without having to grease with butter or oil. Baking paper is ovenable up to between 220 – 240 degrees Celsius. Oh, and I’m absolutely obsessed with baking and cooking with it.

Greaseproof paper (at least, KKD’s greaseproof paper) is produced with pulp and tightly beaten to get the impermeable nature of the paper which has a protective barrier designed to specifically repel grease. This paper is incredibly natural and can be used to line cartons, bakery shelves, takeaway boxes and wrap products to prevent liquids from permeating. There should be no reason to grease greaseproof paper - rather use the siliconised paper. Greaseproof Disks and bags are also made from greaseproof paper and come pre-cut in a variety of sizes.

So there it is! I hope this was a simple enough and straightforward explanation.

Oh! And what’s Wax Paper I hear you ask? Can I use it in the oven, is what you’re wondering? The short answer is, NO. For the slightly longer answer, take a squizz at my blog post: Baking Paper vs. Wax Paper - What's the Difference?
