My Top 5 Uses for Wax Paper:

When I think of Wax Paper, I think of the paper I use to line my countertop with when I’m kneading dough, or for wrapping sandwiches or food for cold storage. The thing about wax paper is that it creates a moisture barrier, keeping food fresh for longer. This is pretty nifty stuff but in actual fact, there are some truly unique uses for Wax Paper, and I’d like to share some of these with you:
- Keep Your Ice-Cream Ice-Free
If you consume ice-cream like I do this tip is actually null and void, but for those of you that keep their ice-cream in their freezer for a little longer than 48 hours… Place a piece of wax paper on top of the ice-cream before closing the lid again and popping it into the freezer. This keeps the ice-cream from becoming super solid and icy because who wants that? No one. No one does. And, hey guess what? It works like a treat!
- No More Microwave Spatters
While wax paper must never go in the oven, it can be used in the microwave to cover food in order to prevent splatters when cooking. The paper is typically unaffected by microwaves and therefore will not heat to the point of combustion under normal usage. It’s far better to use wax paper in the microwave than certain plastics (which can melt) and of course foil is a definite no go.
- Keep Cheese Fresh:
After opening and cutting into a block of cheese, the general consensus seems to be re-wrapping the exposed cheese with plastic wrap. But this doesn’t actually achieve optimum cheese freshness. Plastic wrap or cling wrap is designed to create a full barrier of protection which most of the time is great; However, cheese needs some air and humidity to breathe. The wax paper provides this while still protecting it from drying out. Therefore, rather remove the remaining cheese from its original plastic packaging and wrap it loosely in a piece of wax paper before putting it back in your fridge.
Alternatively, you could use a cheese dome… but I don’t actually know what that is.
- Cork a wine bottle:
Another null and void tip for my household because once a bottle of wine is opened, it will be consumed in its entirety. But for those people making better lifestyle choices… Before you seal a bottle of wine for the night, wrap a little piece of wax paper around the cork. The wax paper will stick to the bottleneck, creating an even tighter seal, which makes for even fresher wine. The wax also allows for the cork to be even easier to pop open next time.
- Fast Funnel:
Need a funnel but you’re not 21 anymore so don’t have one on hand? All you need to do is roll a piece of wax paper into a cone shape, insert it into the jar/bottle, and pour. Wax paper funnels are genuinely the ideal way to re-fill anything. From spices, grains and seeds to hardware and even liquids. In fact, especially with liquids because the liquid won’t soak through the paper.
