How To Create the Best Sandwich

It sounds so simple, making a sandwich. And it can be, but a few missteps and the results can differ vastly. There are few things more satisfying than a truly delicious, well put together sandwich. But a stodgy, dry or overly soggy sandwich can change a good day to a miserable one, with one single bite.

I've put together a few essential tips that I use when it comes to creating the best sandwich:

Freshly baked bread baby!

Make sure the bread you choose is freshly baked and still unsliced. The bread you choose is important. I generally opt for a ciabatta, whole-grain loaf, French baguette or a good rye. But everything has it's place depending on the ingredients.

Let's not get too carried away

Remember you should be able to get all the ingredients into your mouth in one bite, otherwise you may as well serve it deconstructed with a knife and fork. Aim for 4 or 5 good quality ingredients that go well together and see how that goes.

Toasting can be a gamechanger

If you are making the sandwich at home, an option could be toasting the bread in the oven. Toasting brings out the sweetness of the bread and warms up whatever you put inside the sandwich.

Condiments, condiments, condiments

I usually pick two and spread one on the bottom slice and the other on the top layer. For example, mustard on the bottom and then just before topping the sandwich, put some mayonnaise on the other slice. Skip the creamy spreads here, because they can dull the flavor of the other ingredients.

Protein time

Pick your meat and/or cheese for the sandwich. I usually always have both and think about what matches the bread you've chosen because this combination is crucial for ultimate sandwich satisfaction. Make the meat layer wider than the bread by about a centimetre all the way around. The cheese underneath keeps the veggies from sliding around and the wide meat layer stops the bread from getting soggy.

Veggie loading

When adding your veggies, never under estimate the importance of hearing that crunch sound when taking that first bite. A few lettuce leaves assist with keeping the bread soggy-free.

Layer it well

As mentioned, if you put the meat and cheese on the bottom, it helps to combat sogginess. The watering veggies like sliced tomatoes should be placed in the centre of the sandwich and then add the crisper ones on the top layer.

And don't forget to season! Salt and pepper are your friends here.

Packaging Options

Sandwiches should be made to be eaten straight away. However, this isn't always possible and sometimes you need to prepare the sandwich for later. Here are a few eco-friendly packaging options to assist in keeping your sandwich as fresh and as awesome as possible:

Zipper Bags protect your products from moisture, oxygen, dust, light and odours. KKD Zipper Bags are 100% recyclable and reusable.

Another route to go is Wax Paper because it creates a moisture barrier, keeping food fresh for longer. It’s an eco-friendly alternative to plastic and the ideal paper for wrapping your toasties and on the go bakery items. Wrap your goodies in wax paper and pop it into one of our recyclable Kraft Bags with the rest of your lunch and off you go.

KKD's biodegradable Baking Paper is also a convenient option. 100% natural and siliconized on both sides, this will help with fresh wrapping and storing.
